Born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Lalith Martyn graduated with his MBBS from the University of Colombo in 1984. A thirst for adventure and a love of fishing and the All Blacks brought Lalith to New Zealand in 1988, where he worked in the public health system until 1994, when his interest in emergency medicine came to the fore and he joined the White Cross Accident and Medical Clinic in Otahuhu. He was awarded the Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1995; the Diploma in Sports Medicine in 1996 and the Diploma in Emergency Medicine in 2001 from the University of Auckland. He became a Fellow in Urgent Care Medicine (FRNZCUC) in 2001. That same year he was appointed Medical Director of White Cross Otahuhu and after eight years in the role relinquished the post so he could spend less time behind a desk and more time doing what he loves best: tending to patients.
